Sarbaranjan Mondal and associated organization SHER (Society for Heritage and Ecological Researchers) focus on the conservation of mangroves and Bengal tigers in and around the Sundarban Tiger Reserve. His field of work aimed at reducing human infiltration into forests, monitoring tigers that stray into villages and preventing the illegal logging of mangroves. He coordinated campaigns in schools and local clubs to raise awareness of forest management activities carried out by the forest department. He also created a network of youth that helps gather and update information related to illegal forest activities such a poaching. Furthermore, in order to navigate through water- ways and ensure his presence in conflict areas across harsh terrain, Sarbaranjan manufactured a motorized boat.
Photo courtesy: Sarbaranjan Mondal.Binod Dulu Borah worked on the mitigation of human-animal conflict along the Karbi-Anglong hills near Kaziranga Tiger Reserve by spreading awareness on its rich biodiversity and sensitizing locals against killing of wildlife. He installed TINA Grant Wildlife Awareness hoardings on the NH-37 highway and villages close to forest land. Funds covered costs of printing and framing of hoarding, installation, transport, labor and bamboo posts. Hoardings also included human-elephant conflicts which is persistent in the area. Binod also plans to use the grant to provide an ‘Early Warning System' which will act as a warning alarm to villagers to protect their crops from intruding elephants along with search lights to maneuver elephants away from the fields.
Photo courtesy: Bindu Dulu Borah.Roheet Karoo who is the Honorary Wildlife Warden of Nagpur district is affiliated with the Wildlife Conservation and Development Centre and focused on man-tiger related conflicts by surveying tigers in areas such as the Bhandara and Brahmapuri divisions. He also surveyed landscapes in order keep track of conditions in and around his operating district. Most of the funding provided by the grant was spent on transport to regions investigated for illegal forest activity by the CBI. He had also travelled to Chandrapur and Gadhricholi districts where tiger poaching had occurred. He worked alongside forest department officials of the southern Umred range who travelled with him to locations of tiger poaching events to track and catch poachers.
