Train Driver Gets 3 Yrs' RI For Crushing Jumbos

On Friday, a court in Dehradun sentenced a train driver to three years' rigorous imprisonment for running over three elephants crossing rail tracks inside Rajaji National Park 12 years ago.

Chief judicial magistrate Kunwar Amanendra Singh also slapped a fine of `10,000 on Vijay Pal after finding him guilty of violating the permissible speed limit of 30 kmph in national parks and wildlife sanctuaries, which led to the accident in September 1998, prosecution counsel S D Pant said. This is the first instance of a train driver being convicted of driving train at a greater speed than the permissible limit and killing wild animals, Pant claimed. Read the full report here.
