The activists have made their demand formal by sending off mails to not only the Central Zoo Authority (CZA), but also Union Minister of Environment and Forests Jairam Ramesh, who recently released guidelines for Human Leopard Conflict Management.
The guidelines are specific for leopards that are either raised in captivity or have been injured. Within the national park there is an enclosure for such cats.
The guidelines say that the leopards should be housed in cages where they have enough space to roam around freely and can engage in climbing trees and have a constant source of water.
“However, the photographs we have are clear evidence of the fact that the cages where the cats are kept are not spacious enough for free movement," said Sunish Subramanian, honorary Animal Welfare Officer and also Secretary Plants and Animals Welfare Society (PAWS) Mumbai.
