Photo: Gaurav Shirodkar. A189.28 sq. km. forest area just 60 km. from Nagpur, Umred-Karhandla will be the first sanctuary in Maharashtra to be declared as a 'satellite core'. Bor is a 138 sq. km. tiger reserve that is too small to support viable tiger populations. Now, with the status of sub-Protected Area, Umred will support the actual Protected Area.
Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (PCCF) Sarjan Bhagat said, "The state government will issue a notification declaring Umred-Karhandla's new status soon." He said the department was in the process of constituting a committee to declare Umred-Karhandla a Critical Tiger Habitat (CTH) and also identify a buffer zone around it.
On April 21, Sanctuary Asia editor and noted environmentalist Bittu Sahgal had written to CM Devendra Fadnavis and NTCA asking that the ecologically-flourishing Umred-Karhandla, notified as a wildlife sanctuary on June 29, 2012, be made a tiger reserve. A five-member committee headed by Debabrata Swain, Inspector General of Forest (IGF), had submitted a report to the PCCF supporting Umred-Karhandla as CTH. Swain said there was a greater need for tiger conservation in areas like Brahmapuri that houses 25 tigers.
