Badly planned roads and other linear infrastructure are increasingly emerging as a threat to connectivity of multiple rare, endangered and threatened wild animal populations. This threat can be suitably mitigated provided good data on roadkills / wildlife-vehicle collisions is available. To fill this gap, WCT has launched an android-based application, which will help record/collect data on roadkills, specifically on roadkills that occur on roads and other linear infrastructure bisecting forests.
The freely downloadable mobile app will allow users to take geo-tagged pictures of roadkills of wild animals. Data collected and uploaded by citizens will be available in a "Citizen Science" framework, made available on the website roadkills.in for the benefit of society at large.
The information recorded from the application will help identify crucial sections of roads or railway lines where animal deaths are high, singling out areas that require urgent mitigation measures.
As most animal deaths go unrecognised and unrecorded, ‘Roadkills' aims to bring these casualties to the fore by collating data which will help direct mitigation measures so that conservation can go hand-in-hand with planned development.
