The state officials in question claimed that the act was committed in self-defence, as the emaciated female did not respond to tranquilliser darts and had been reported to have attacked livestock in nearby settlements. If cattle killing becomes a justification for killing tigers, then Panthera tigris' future in India seems to be bleak.
