In a letter written recently to chief minister Sheila Dikshit, minister of environment and forests Jairam Ramesh has asked the Delhi government to "take full advantage" of the fact that the river is in full spate after a 30-year gap and either upstream storage facilities or recharge wells in the flood plain must be made to tap excess monsoon water each year.
The recommendations say that with Yamuna being a perennial river, it is important to increase ground water potential through flood plain management. "Each year we were losing a lot of water during monsoon since Delhi has no upstream storage facilities. The recommendations, while they are highly welcome and practical, will have to be studied to see the viability of the options suggested," said a senior Delhi government official.
